Marinara sauce

By Food E Fare

Marinara sauce is a classic Italian tomato sauce that is simple yet flavorful. It is a versatile sauce that serves as a base for many Italian dishes, particularly pasta. Marinara sauce is known for its bright and robust tomato flavor, enhanced with garlic, onions, herbs, and sometimes additional seasonings. Here's a basic recipe for homemade marinara sauce:

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces (about 800g) canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

Sauté Onions and Garlic:

  • In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add finely chopped onions and sauté until they are soft and translucent. Add minced garlic and continue to sauté for another minute until fragrant.

Add Tomatoes:

  • Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes. Stir to combine.

Season:

  • Add dried oregano, dried basil, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper to the sauce.

Simmer:

  • Bring the sauce to a simmer over low to medium heat. Allow it to simmer for at least 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This helps the flavors meld and the sauce to thicken.

Adjust Seasoning:

  • Taste the marinara sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add more salt, pepper, or herbs according to your preference.

Finish and Garnish:

  • If desired, stir in fresh basil or parsley just before serving. This adds a burst of fresh flavor to the sauce.

Use as Desired:

  • Marinara sauce is now ready to be used as a pasta sauce, pizza sauce, or in various Italian dishes.
