Steak frites

By Food E Fare

Steak frites is a classic French dish that consists of a grilled or pan-seared steak served with French fries. The name "steak frites" literally translates to "steak and fries" in French, reflecting the simplicity of the dish. Despite its simplicity, when executed well, it's a delicious and satisfying combination. Here's a basic idea of how to prepare steak frites:

  • Steak of your choice (common choices include sirloin, ribeye, or flank steak)
  • Potatoes for making French fries
  • Salt and pepper for seasoning
  • Olive oil or clarified butter for cooking
  • Optional: Garlic, herbs, or a compound butter for additional flavor

For the Steak:

Preheat the Grill or Pan:

  • Preheat a grill or a pan over medium-high heat.

Season the Steak:

  • Season the steak with salt and pepper. You can also use additional seasonings, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or your favorite steak rub.

Cook the Steak:

  • Grill or pan-sear the steak to your desired doneness. Cooking times will vary based on the thickness of the steak and your preferred level of doneness.

Rest the Steak:

  • Once cooked, let the steak rest for a few minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.

Optional: Add Flavor with Compound Butter:

  • Consider serving the steak with a slice of compound butter on top. Compound butter is butter mixed with herbs, garlic, or other seasonings.

For the Frites (French Fries):

Prepare the Potatoes:

  • Peel and cut the potatoes into thin strips to make French fries.

Preheat the Oil:

  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to around 350°F (175°C).

Fry the Potatoes:

  • Carefully fry the potato strips in batches until golden brown and crispy. Remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.

Season the Frites:

  • Season the fries with salt immediately after they come out of the fryer while they are still hot.

  • Plate the steak and fries together, and you can add a side salad or a simple sauce if desired.
