To make pancakes, you'll need the following ingredients and steps:


  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or vegetable oil
  • Additional butter or oil for cooking
  • Optional toppings: maple syrup, fresh fruit, chocolate chips, whipped cream, etc.


  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar (if using), baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then add the milk and melted butter or oil. Mix until well combined.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. It's okay if the batter is a bit lumpy.
  • Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a small amount of butter or oil to coat the surface.
  • Once the skillet is hot, pour about 1/4 cup of batter onto the skillet for each pancake. Cook until bubbles form on the surface and the edges start to look set, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Flip the pancakes and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Repeat with the remaining batter, adding more butter or oil to the skillet as needed.
  • Serve the pancakes warm with your favorite toppings.
