Sweet and Sour Pork is a popular Chinese-American dish known for its delicious combination of crispy fried pork and a tangy sweet and sour sauce. Here's a basic recipe for making Sweet and Sour Pork:


For the Pork:

  • 1 lb pork loin or pork shoulder, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup cornstarch, for coating
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch, dissolved in 2 tablespoons water

For Stir-Frying:

  • 1 bell pepper, cut into chunks
  • 1 onion, cut into chunks
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks (fresh or canned)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced


Prepare the Pork:

  • Season the pork pieces with salt and pepper.
  • Dip each piece of pork in beaten eggs, then coat it thoroughly in cornstarch.

Fry the Pork:

  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large, deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry the coated pork pieces in batches until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Make the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • In a small saucepan, combine ketchup, rice vinegar, sugar, and soy sauce.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Add the dissolved cornstarch, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat.

Stir-Fry Vegetables:

  • In a separate wok or skillet, heat a little oil over medium-high heat.
  • Add minced garlic and ginger, stir briefly until fragrant.
  • Add bell pepper, onion, and pineapple chunks. Stir-fry until the vegetables are slightly tender.

Combine Pork, Vegetables, and Sauce:

  • Add the fried pork to the wok with the stir-fried vegetables.
  • Pour the sweet and sour sauce over the pork and vegetables. Toss everything together until the pork and vegetables are well-coated.


  • Serve Sweet and Sour Pork over rice, and garnish with additional pineapple chunks if desired.
